At the annual Meta Connect conference, Mark Zuckerberg delivered a keynote speech that set the stage for a major transformation. He revealed Meta’s ambitious plan to infuse cutting-edge AI enhancements into its suite of applications and devices, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. This initiative aims to bring “state-of-the-art AI into the apps that billions of people use.”
The New AI Experiences
Meta’s AI updates encompass a range of features and innovations, each designed to cater to specific needs:
Meta AI Chatbot
Meta is rolling out a beta version of an “advanced conversational assistant” that will be available on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, with plans to extend its reach to Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and Quest 3. In the United States, Meta AI will provide real-time information, thanks to a partnership with Microsoft Bing. It also introduces a tool for image generation powered by a groundbreaking image model called Emu (Expressive Media Universe). Meta AI harnesses the capabilities of a custom model built on technology derived from the company’s open-source LLM, Llama 2.
An AI ‘Cast of Characters’
Meta has introduced a fascinating array of 28 beta AIs, each with unique interests and personalities. Some of these AIs are portrayed by prominent cultural icons and influencers, including Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, Kendall Jenner, and Naomi Osaka. Meta’s promotional materials refer to this ensemble as a ‘new cast of characters,’ each with its own intriguing backstory.
AI Studio Platform
Meta has unveiled the AI Studio platform, empowering businesses to create AI chatbots for Meta’s messaging services, including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Furthermore, Meta plans to launch a sandbox tool in the near future, enabling individuals to experiment with creating their own AI solutions.
Generative AI Stickers Across Apps
In the near future, users will gain the ability to edit and co-create images with their friends on Instagram using innovative AI editing tools for restyling and background adjustments. This feature, driven by the capabilities of Llama 2 and Meta’s new image generation model, Emu, swiftly transforms text prompts into stickers within seconds. The rollout of this feature will begin with select English-language users in WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook Stories over the next month.
Ray-Ban Smart Glasses with Meta AI
Meta AI is set to be seamlessly integrated into Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, allowing users to interact with it through voice commands like “Hey Meta.” This functionality enables users to kindle their creativity, obtain information, and control their glasses with ease. The collection of glasses, starting at $299 USD, is scheduled to launch on October 17 and is available for pre-order today.
Mark Zuckerberg humbly acknowledged that these Meta AI product launches represent the early stages of development. He recognized that they still possess certain limitations, emphasizing the significance of user feedback in driving improvements. He underscored the distinction between Meta AI, which benefits from real-time information access, and other AI systems that may lack this capability. The journey toward enhanced AI experiences is ongoing, and Meta remains committed to advancing its offerings.
