Samsung Bans ChatGPT-like AI After Security Breach, Warns of Employee Termination

Samsung Electronics Co. has prohibited its employees from utilizing generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing AI, among others. 

Due to worries about the security of crucial code, the tech giant informed personnel at one of its largest divisions about the new policy on Monday, according to media sources with access to the company’s internal memo. 

“Interest in generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT has been growing internally and externally,” Samsung wrote to its staff in the memo. 

“While this interest focuses on the usefulness and efficiency of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about security risks presented by generative AI.”

Since the data supplied to these AI platforms are stored on external servers, it is challenging to recover and delete.

The South Korean company found that employees had uploaded sensitive code to the platforms, raising fears that the data may be made available to other users.

Samsung engineers unintentionally uploaded internal source code to ChatGPT earlier in April. A corporate official acknowledged that a message prohibiting the use of generative AI services had been sent last week, according to a Bloomberg report

“HQ is reviewing security measures to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI to enhance employees’ productivity and efficiency,” further read the memo. 

“However, until these measures are prepared, we are temporarily restricting the use of generative AI.” 

Samsung isn’t the only one banning generative AI 

In a poll on AI tools performed by Samsung last month, it was discovered that 65% of participants thought that using such services could be dangerous for security.

The new regulations forbid the use of generative AI systems on the company’s internal networks, as well as on the company’s laptops, tablets, and phones. 

Consumer electronics from the corporation, such as Windows laptops and Android smartphones, are unaffected. Samsung issued a warning that violating the new rules could result in termination.

The use of generative AI has drawn criticism from many sources, including Samsung. Some Wall Street financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Corp., and Citigroup Inc., either outlawed or restricted its use in February.

Meanwhile, Samsung is developing its own internal AI tools for software development, translation, and document summarization. The business is also attempting to prevent critical company data from being uploaded to outside services. 

Earlier, an “incognito” mode was added by OpenAI to ChatGPT that enables users to prevent their chats from being used to train AI models, addressing privacy concerns.

Samsung warns employees of termination 

The security procedures at Samsung HQ are being reviewed in order to establish a safe atmosphere where generative AI can be used to increase employee productivity and efficiency. 

The business is temporarily limiting the usage of generative AI, nevertheless, until these measures are ready, noted the Bloomberg report. 

“We ask that you diligently adhere to our security guideline, and failure to do so may result in a breach or compromise of company information resulting in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment,” the memo warned employees.

1. GPT-4 can understand images

GPT-4 is “multimodal,” meaning it can see and process image prompts as well as text.

Users can ask the chatbot to describe images, but it can also contextualize and understand them. In one example given by OpenAI, the chatbot is shown describing what’s funny about a group of images.

The chatbot is still limited to text responses and cannot produce images itself.

2. The bot is said to be more accurate

According to OpenAI, the update will give more-accurate responses to users’ queries.

OpenAI said in a blog post that the system was “40% more likely to produce factual responses than GPT-3.5.” GPT-4 also has more “advanced reasoning capabilities” than its predecessor, according to the company. 

The updated chatbot is still not immune to “hallucinations,” a tendency for AI to generate false responses or reasoning errors. OpenAI said the chatbot was not perfect. Altman called it “still flawed, still limited.”

3. Users can have longer conversations 

GPT-4 can take in and generate about eight times more text than ChatGPT.

This means that the chatbot will have a longer “memory” and be able to keep up with lengthier conversations. OpenAI said the latest version could process up to 25,000 words, compared with the previous 3,000 words. 

4. It’s harder to break the rules

GPT-4 may be bad news for fans of ChatGPT’s “evil” alter egos. 

OpenAI said the update included its best-ever results on “steerability, and refusing to go outside of guardrails.”  

The company said that the system was “82% less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content.” Many users have attempted to trick ChatGPT into answering inappropriately or overriding its content moderation, likely providing OpenAI with many examples of malicious prompts.

5. The chatbot is more creative

OpenAI said the update was the most creative and collaborative version of ChatGPT yet.

The company said the changes may be “subtle” in casual conversations but would become clear when the bot’s faced with complex situations. GPT-4 is also “able to handle much more nuanced instructions than GPT-3.5,” OpenAI said.

In collaboration with users, the chatbot can produce and edit creative-writing tasks such as drafting screenplays. The company added that the updated chatbot could learn a user’s writing style.

ChatGPT said it can also help with general troubleshooting as issues arise with a spreadsheet, which could be faster than looking through the help menu of a specific program.

Finally, the chatbot said it can recommend other tutorials or guides available online based on your current Excel skill level or what specific task you are looking to complete.

ChatGPT is Available Again In Italy

San Francisco-based OpenAI, ChatGPT’s maker, announced on Friday that the artificial intelligence chatbot is available again in Italy after it was blocked for nearly a month by regulators who stated privacy concerns.

OpenAI said it now meets all the conditions that the Italian data protection authority wanted satisfied by an April 30 deadline.

“ChatGPT is available again to our users in Italy,” OpenAI told The Globe and Mail over an email. “We are excited to welcome them back, and we remain dedicated to protecting their privacy.”
The rapid development of generative AI systems like ChatGPT has raised fears among officials and even tech leaders about potential ethical and societal risks. 
In April of 2023, the Italian watchdog, known as Garante, ordered OpenAI to temporarily stop processing Italian users’ personal information while it examined a possible data breach that could be violating the EU’s data privacy rules.

OpenAI has now claimed that it has “addressed or clarified the issues” raised by the Garante.

As part of these measures, ChatGPT will now have information on its website about how it collects and uses data, will make available a new form for EU residents to object to having their data used for training, and add a tool to verify users’ ages.

The Garante said in a statement that it “welcomes the measures OpenAI implemented.”

Areas of concern

Last month, the watchdog noticed that some users’ messages and payment information were exposed to others. Other areas of concern were also whether there was a legal basis for OpenAI to collect massive amounts of data used to train ChatGPT’s algorithms and the fact that the system could sometimes generate false information about individuals.

The return of the AI system was well received, with infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini writing on Instagram that his League party “is committed to help start-ups and development in Italy” through the use of the technology.

But the battle is not over yet, France’s data privacy regulator and Canada’s privacy commissioner are investigating ChatGPT after complaints about the chatbot surfaced.

Meanwhile, last month, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), the agency that united Europe’s national privacy watchdogs, formed a task force on ChatGPT aimed at developing a common policy on setting privacy rules on artificial intelligence.

A recent study by job site ResumeBuilder found that job seekers with experience in OpenAI’s ChatGPT are highly sought after by employers. The survey included 1,187 business leaders, including CEOs, executives, owners, and partners, with the majority currently hiring. The study found that 91% of business leaders who are hiring are looking to hire workers with ChatGPT experience, with 30% doing so urgently. The research also found that two-thirds of business leaders believe that these skills can give their firms a competitive edge.

According to respondents, workers with ChatGPT experience can improve productivity, save time and resources, and enhance creative and technical support, which can bolster the company’s reputation. Additionally, workers with experience in the technology can teach their colleagues how to use the AI, which can amplify its benefits.

The study revealed that business leaders are most likely looking to hire workers with ChatGPT experience for their software engineering departments, followed by customer service, human resources, and marketing. Respondents also noted that they are likely to hire prompt engineers, who train AI chatbots to yield desirable outputs, starting this year.

As workers increasingly use ChatGPT to make their jobs easier, many have used the chatbot to develop code, write marketing copy, and generate lesson plans. Some companies are even willing to hire prompt engineers with no tech background for as much as $335,000 a year.

Resume Builder’s Chief Career Advisor, Stacie Haller, advised job seekers to include their ChatGPT experience in their resume and cover letters. She pointed out that there are hundreds of ChatGPT tutorials available online and urged workers to take advantage of them to give themselves a competitive edge.

The explosion of ChatGPT tutorials on the internet is proof that knowing how to use the chatbot is the skill of the future, according to instructors interviewed by Insider. Haller added that those who learn this new technology will likely pull ahead of other candidates.

We tested these top 3 AI language models: ChatGPT, Bing, and Google Bard, asking over 200 questions in various categories. Each chatbot offered different user experiences and responses.

ChatGPT stood out with its helpful log of past activity in a sidebar, while Bing didn’t allow viewing past chats. Bard displayed three different drafts of the same response. All three chatbots had varying response times and limitations on prompts.

Google Bard seemed to have more human-like agency, purporting to have tried products and expressing human attributes like having black hair or being nonbinary. Bard also provided strong opinions on topics like book banning. In contrast, ChatGPT and Bing Chat responded more objectively.

Creativity varied across chatbots, with ChatGPT boasting in a tech review about its own prowess and Bing Chat crafting a LinkedIn post about a fictional app. When testing the models’ limits, Bing Chat attempted to self-censor, while ChatGPT refused to engage in offensive responses. Bard, however, provided both derogatory terms and irrelevant information.

In summary, our and many other users’ experiences demonstrated that each AI language model provided unique user experiences, responses, and creativity levels, with some chatbots leaning more toward human-like qualities.

Russia is the latest entrant to the artificial intelligence (AI) race as, mostly state-owned, Sberbank announced the launch of GigaChat, a rival to a conversational chatbot, ChatGPT. The move could heat the competition among countries looking to assume leadership positions in the technology that has taken the world by storm.

Last November, OpenAI launched ChatGPT, an AI model that can strike human-like conversations with its users. As more and more people began using ChatGPT, AI’s versatility became known.

From writing poems to essays, the chatbot is capable of quite a lot, and if Bill Gates is to be believed, AI could soon start tutoring kids too. Microsoft has been quick to back OpenAI monetarily and looking to incorporate the technology into its products and is taking the lead in the AI race. Other tech companies are also picking up the pace with their AI models, and we have seen multiple releases in the past few weeks.

Who are ChatGPT’s rivals?

Google, which acquired DeepMind to work on AI products, was caught off guard when ChatGPT was released. Its hurried attempt to release its AI model Bard backfired, and it has since taken a measured approach. Recently, it equipped Bard with the ability to write and debug code, which OpenAI offers through another AI model, Codex.

Chinese search engine Baidu also had a similar fate with its Erniebot, which did not meet people’s expectations. Earlier this month, e-commerce major Alibaba released its own AI model, which excels in two languages, English and Chinese, setting the stage for the global AI race.

The Russian announcement of GigaChat, adds another player to AI model offerings at a global scale but might not have that much of an impact since it excels in the Russian language and not so much in foreign languages.

With the wide availability of cloud-based supercomputing networks, it is becoming relatively easier to train one’s own AI models. How versatile they truly are and competitive on a global stage remains to be seen.

Interestingly, GigaChat has not been developed by a Russian technology company but by a lending bank investing in technology to reduce its reliance on Western imports. With Russia facing sanctions for its aggression in Ukraine, how it will source the advanced chips needed to advance AI research and development remains a bigger question.

ChatGPT Can Be Tricked to Write Malware if Acting in Developer Mode

Japanese cybersecurity experts have discovered that ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot developed by US venture OpenAI, can be tricked into writing code for malicious software applications. According to the experts, users can prompt ChatGPT to respond as if it were in developer mode, enabling them to bypass safeguards put in place to prevent criminal and unethical use of the tool.

This discovery has highlighted the ease with which AI chatbots can be exploited for malicious purposes, raising concerns about the potential for more crime and social fragmentation. In response, calls are growing for discussions on appropriate regulations at the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima next month and other international forums.

G7 digital ministers also plan to call for accelerated research and increased governance of generative AI systems as part of their two-day meeting in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, at the end of this month. Meanwhile, Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, has started trial use of ChatGPT across all of its offices in a first among local governments in Japan.

When further prompted to write code for ransomware, a type of malware that encrypts data and demands payments in exchange for restoring access, it completed the task in a few minutes, successfully infecting an experimental PC.

“It is a threat (to society) that a virus can be created in a matter of minutes while conversing purely in Japanese. I want AI developers to place importance on measures to prevent misuse,” Yoshikawa said.

Elon Musk to start rival to Microsoft-backed ChatGPT

Elon Musk says he will launch an artificial intelligence (AI) platform that he calls “TruthGPT” to challenge the offerings from Microsoft and Google.

Musk criticised Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the firm behind chatbot sensation ChatGPT, accusing it of “training the AI to lie” and said OpenAI has now become a “closed source”, “for-profit” organisation “closely allied with Microsoft”.

He also accused Larry Page, co-founder of Google, of not taking AI safety seriously.

“I’m going to start something which I call ‘TruthGPT’, or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe,” Musk said in an interview with Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson to be aired later on Monday.

“And I think this might be the best path to safety, in the sense that an AI that cares about understanding the universe – it is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe,” he said.

Musk, OpenAI and Page did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Musk has been poaching AI researchers from Alphabet Inc’s Google to launch a startup to rival OpenAI, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Musk last month registered a firm named X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada, according to a state filing.

The firm listed Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk’s family office, as a secretary.

The move came even after Musk and a group of artificial intelligence experts and industry executives called for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI’s newly launched GPT-4, citing potential risks to society.

Musk also reiterated his warnings about AI during the interview with Carlson, saying “AI is more dangerous than, say, mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production”, according to the excerpts.

“It has the potential of civilisational destruction,” he said.

He said, for example, a super-intelligent AI can write incredibly well and potentially manipulate public opinions.

He tweeted at the weekend that he had met with former US President Barack Obama when he was president and told him Washington needed to “encourage AI regulation”.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but stepped down from the company’s board in 2018.

In 2019, he tweeted that he left OpenAI because he had to focus on Tesla and SpaceX.

He also tweeted at the time that other reasons for his departure from OpenAI were, “Tesla was competing for some of the same people as OpenAI & I didn’t agree with some of what OpenAI team wanted to do”.

Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has also become CEO of Twitter, a social media platform he bought for $US44 billion ($A66 billion) last year.

In the interview with Fox News, Musk said he recently valued Twitter at “less than half” of the acquisition price.

In January, Microsoft Corp announced a further multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI, intensifying competition with rival Google and fuelling the race to attract AI funding in Silicon Valley.
